PAT (Portable Appliance Test)
Portable appliance testing or PAT is a process for testing the safety and integrity of electrical appliances by means of an electrical test and thorough visual inspection.
Although there is no legal requirement to carry out portable appliance testing, the employer is required under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 to ensure that any electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. The frequency of testing/inspection is dependent on the type of equipment and the environment it is used in.
Upon completion of the inspection and testing you will receive the following:
- An inventory containing each appliance type, name, location and description
- A full set of test results for each appliance tested
- A full list of any failed items with an explanation of their failure
- A visible pass or fail label on each appliance detailing the inspection date, next test due and the inspector’s signature
Emergency Lighting Test
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales stipulates that the Responsible Person or Competent Person acting on their behalf, must ensure that the premises and any facilities, equipment and devices are subject to a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.
BS5266-1: 2016 recommends that the minimum prescribed inspection and testing is carried out at the following intervals:
- Daily – Visually inspect indicators of central power supply for correct operation
- Monthly – Short duration test
- Subsequent annual test – Full discharge test
